The End of the MOT Extension

On the 23rd of March the UK government introduced an extension period for MOTs, to protect drivers from Covid-19. If your vehicle was due a MOT between 30th of March 2020 and 31st of July 2020 you were automatically granted a 6-month extension on the due date of your MOT.

What happens if my mot is due after 31st July?

MOT centres are legally and safely open for business. MOT centres like Trostre Tyres are taking precautions to keep staff and customers safe: such as strict enforcement of social distancing and provision of PPE for members of staff. As a result, the government has deemed MOTs safe; therefore, the extension will not be available after the 31st of July 2020.

This means that from the 1st of August 2020, your car, van or motorcycle’s MOT will be due on the normal date, with NO extension period. You must book a MOT as normal. The 6 month extension granted to vehicles prior to this is still valid.

Whilst this may seem unfair, it is actually beneficial for your vehicle! A MOT test is a routine test that often finds defects before they become problematic. This gives you the opportunity to fix them early, at a cheaper cost. People who have been granted a 6-month extension might encounter a whole host of problems that would have been avoidable had they had their MOT on time.

When should I not take my vehicle for its mot?

Covid-19 is still prevalent, so it important to maintain the same precautions that were taken during lockdown. DO NOT bring your vehicle in for a MOT if:

  • You are self-isolating due to Covid-19 symptoms.
  • You are living with someone that has covid-19 symptoms.
  • You are vulnerable so are advised to shield.

If you cannot take your vehicle for a MOT and the vehicle tax is expiring, you should register it as off-road (SORN). This can easily be done online at When you are no longer self-isolating or shielding, book your MOT test then tax the vehicle after it passes. Do NOT drive the vehicle until you take it to its MOT.
